Follow along with this timeline that outlines the history of Asian American activism at IU. An abbreviated version is presented below:
IUB students established Asian American Association (AAA) in 1987. The organization was first named Asian American Student Association, but eventually renamed to Asian American Association. Junior David Chih (BA 1990, PhD 2001) created AAA because he feels available Asian and minority student organizations do not reflect his experiences as an American growing up with Asian heritage. The group starts informally with 10 members. Within a year, it grew large enough to formalize with goals, board officers, and a vision to provide a community for IUB Asian American students.
We are widely known as one of the largest student organizations on campus. Our presence is recognized by the university and various AAA’s throughout the state. We continue to uphold the mission of instilling and maintaining a spirit of community among Asian American and Pacific Islander students, along with those interested in the culture.
Stephanie T.X. Nguyen, PhD Student and AAA Graduate Advisor, has also created a slideshow about Asian American History at our university. More quotes, documents, and photos can be found in the slides below!
